Happy Wednesday, Scouts. Welcome to Edition XIV of Scout & Tell.

We’ve got a great article out this week for the people with safety on the mind. If you’ve ever spent any time on a bicycle, you’ve probably got a scary story to share of a near tragedy between you and a car. One local resident is putting technology to work in hopes of a safer journey.

If you prefer to lace up running shoes, but you’re seeking community, this week’s club is right up your alley. Plus, we’ve packed in more than 40 different events happening across our slice of life. Dig and enjoy.

We will see you out there,

Local Resident Builds Bike App For Safety, Not Efficiency

The best entrepreneurial ideas come from a gap in the market when someone is fulfilling a personal need.

In the case of Arkadiy Biger, this is exactly how his newest idea came to fruition.

The Fort Collins resident had everything he needed for a bike ride with his child: A bike, a towing trailer and a hitch from REI. What he didn't have was a safe way to bike his child around town.

The result is Trazo, a free route planner that puts comfort and safety ahead of speed.

Yes, Fort Collins has hundreds of miles of bikeable paths around the city, but when you've got progeny in tow, Biger said safety is the most important thing.

“Google Maps just gets you the quickest route on a bicycle. It doesn’t care about the safety, doesn’t care about if it’s a true bicycle lane or it’s just like a painted line," Biger said.

The app helps you find the safest, not most efficient routes around Fort Collins.

Trazo's answer is to rate every street and trail on a four-level traffic stress scale and color the map to match. The app's changelog shows how specific that gets in Fort Collins. Painted bike lanes on roads with a 35 mph limit or higher, or four or more lanes, no longer count as calm, so routes skip JFK Parkway for the quieter streets beside it.

A ride from Midtown to Old Town now crosses Prospect at the Stover Street light instead of the unmarked crossing at Whedbee. A stop-sign crossing at Peterson and Mulberry gets flagged on the map and routes go around it when there's a sensible way.

If you're an efficiency expert, this app isn't for you. Think of it like a road trip. Are you taking the interstate to just get there, or are up for a cruise to enjoy the scenery?

Trazo isn't monetized, so it's free to download, there are no ads and it doesn't track you, rather it's an opportunity to plan out a safe bike trip for you and your comrades.

Because of his ability to leverage vibe coding and open source mapping data, Biger has been able to open the app in several markets across Colorado, including Loveland, Longmont, Boulder, Denver and Colorado Springs.

He's even expanded the free app into other states like Arizona, Utah and North Carolina.

Is this a goal for world-domination in bike-riding apps? Biger says no, far from it.

“I’d love to see people in Fort Collins and Northern Colorado start using it and using it regularly and just getting to places more often and safer."

With texting and driving as prevalent as it's ever been, we'd all love to be safer when we opt for the bike as opposed to the car.

Snow White, Age 5 Months - Chinese Sharpei/Siberian Husky

Meet Snow White! This 37.5-pound pup has a bit of an adventurous streak when it comes to exploring, though she can be a little shy at first with new people. She hasn't met many other dogs yet, so she'll need a patient home with a secure, 6-foot fence while she settles in and finds her confidence.

Snow White is available for adoption at the Greeley Adoption Campus, with a $300 adoption fee. Find out more about this good pup at the NoCo Humane website.

Saturday Miles, Zero Stragglers

The Fort Collins Running Club turns the Poudre River corridor into a rolling Saturday social, 3 to 7 miles at an easy, chatty pace. Its "no drop" rule is a promise: the group regroups about every mile, so no one gets left behind. All ages and abilities are welcome. Its group-run page doubles as a guide to the town's brewery run clubs, several with a post-run beer discount.
