Happy Wednesday, Scouts. Welcome to Edition XIII of Scout & Tell.

Shoutout to you this week, the readers of this newsletter. When I started this a couple months back, I wasn’t sure the type of respond it would get. Overwhelmingly, people have been supportive, giving suggestions, opinions and the feedback has been extremely helpful.

I will always ask, if you have an interesting story to share, don’t hesitate to reach out. I’m always up for it. This newsletter isn’t stone, but will continue to evolve as time lapses. Sections will change and new ideas will emerge. And the content will get better. That’s the goal, at least.

We’ve got Halloween coming this Saturday, so in honor of this hallowed tradition, let’s gather around the campfire and read some spooky experiences and places to visit in northern Colorado.

We will see you out there,

We Asked Northern Colorado Where the Creepiest Spots are Located. You Answered.

A week ago, I logged on to Reddit and asked the Loveland and Fort Collins subreddits the burning question everyone has this time of year:

Where are the haunted places around northern Colorado???

The answers are not disappointing. Some are obvious, while some might be new to you.

The Farmhouse at Jessup Farm

A former employee of The Farmhouse at Jessup Farm says they would clean the upstairs windows at closing, then return half an hour before opening to find children’s handprints on the glass.

“I didn’t believe in ghosts till working there,” said the user.

Decorative objects, including a book, got flung down the stairs with no one at the top, they added, and coworkers had odd experiences too. We haven’t confirmed the account with the restaurant. It’s still the best ghost story anyone sent us.

No Shocker Here, A Cemetery

Bingham Hill Cemetery got a couple of mentions. No shocker here. A cemetery dating back to 1862 has reported having ghost and orb sightning.

Oh my landa I couldn't imagine!

The cemetery is located between Fort Collins and LaPorte, right off Overland Trail and less than a quarter mile west on Bingham Hill Road.

I went out there on Tuesday. It's a sight to see. There are a couple of parking spots and easy access to walk up and to the cemetery. The cemetery is tucked back behind property and has many headstones.

The first burial was 1862, making it the oldest cemetery in Larimer county. There are an estimated 130 graves, but possibly 300+ unmarked.

Take an hour, head out and pay your respects, but only go during daytime hours! It's strictly off limits at night!

Old Town Fort Collins Hotel

The Armstrong Hotel came up for its alleged sightings. The hotel opened in 1923 as one of the tallest buildings in town, declined from the 1970s, closed in 2000 and reopened in 2004. One anonymous online guest review describes footsteps, shadows and a lamp that switched itself on. Treat that as rumor.

Legend, checked

“The Hell Tree,” answered one user. And that's all we got.

The legend says a goat farmer hanged his workers from a cottonwood. Then, he got a taste of his own medicine when they handed him from the same tree.

A 2009 post on the blog (Old) Lost Fort Collins found the story on a supernatural website. The CSU student paper had repeated it the year before.

There were disagreements on where the tree is located, with some saying Horsetooth Road, others saying North Overland Trail.

This one remains a mystery.

The One Everyone Knows

The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park anchors every Northern Colorado ghost list, with the second floor having some supernatural events, according to one commenter.

According to legend, head housekeeper Elizabeth Wilson was lighting lanterns during a storm in June 1911 when a gas leak exploded in the room. She survived, went back to work and lived into her 90s.

Room 217 is also where Stephen King and his wife spent a night in fall 1974, the only paying guests, before he wrote The Shining. The story goes he had a nightmare about his son running through the hallway corridors and boom, the famous scene from the Shining was born.

The hotel’s after-dark ghost tour runs 60 minutes, costs $30 and caps at 20 people.

If You Want a Guide

Put on your walking shoes and get ready to experience Old Town Fort Collins like never before.

Fort Collins Tours founder Lori Juszak added ghost tours in 2011 after Old Town business owners kept telling her their buildings were haunted. The Ghost Tour is an evening walk in and under Old Town, for ages 12 and up.

The Haunted Pub Tour runs about 90 minutes and is 21 and up. Book at fortcollinstours.com.

🦌 Moose Gives Hammock Life a Hard Pass
Rocky Mountain National Park is asking visitors and neighbors to stash hammocks, clotheslines and the like after a moose got tangled in hammock fabric and rope and a bull elk got caught in metal wire. Rangers found and helped both animals, and the park says the fall rut is peak risk season.

Eclair, Age 3 Months - Domestic Shorthair

Meet Eclair! At just 2.2 pounds, this three-month-old kitten is still finding her courage, coming into her new home a bit of a wallflower who's fearful around new people. Give her a quiet space, soft voices, and plenty of patience, and shelter staff expect her to come out of her shell in no time.

Eclair is available for adoption at the Greeley Adoption Campus, with a $200 adoption fee. Find out more about this good girl at the NoCo Humane website.

Rake It Till You Make It

Somewhere in Windsor right now, a pile of leaves the size of a Buick is feeling very confident. The homeowner is 80, the gutters are two stories up and A Little Help would like a word.

The Colorado nonprofit has been serving older adults since 2005, and every fall it rounds up volunteers for Service Saturday. Crews show up at neighbors’ homes to rake, pull weeds, trim bushes, wash windows and get the yard ready for winter. It’s about three hours of work. Check-in is around 9 a.m. with coffee and donuts, tools are provided, and there’s a free drink at the celebration afterward.

Bring the family, your rec league team, your scout troop or your coworkers, or come solo and they’ll place you with a group. Groups top out at six people, and you can claim up to two homes, so pre-register early. Berthoud, Loveland, Johnstown and Milliken head out Saturday, Nov. 7. Fort Collins and Windsor follow Saturday, Nov. 14. Pick your date and grab a rake here.
